WTFC Life President Les King

As you are probably now all aware Wymondham Town Football Club’s beloved Life President Les King passed away over the weekend.

Les was a complete one off and so many tributes have already been paid in all forms of the media that it is very difficult to add anything to those tributes. WTFC Chairman was on Radio Norfolk this morning at 8.15am paying his own personal and the clubs tributes. The Board of Wymondham Town Football Club are pleased that the future of the club was secured at the Kings Head Meadow last Tuesday and that Les lived long enough to see that happen. Les was never happier than writing his Presidents page for the programme and selling the programmes from his car on first team match days. Les was a true supporter of the club and the Kings Head Meadow.

Les was without doubt Mr Wymondham but his influence spreads far beyond the borders of Wymondham and its football club. Les was a true Norfolk Character who touched people’s lives all over the County. In sport his promotion and help with up and coming sports people was legendary. Les was always there to help. His charitable work has seen so many people grateful for the money he raised for Chapel Road School, Attleborough and Star Throwers in Wymondham along with many others. Les sponsored the Norfolk Cricket league for many years and was a regular sight around cricket grounds in the summer.

The world and Norfolk sport will be a lot less happy place without the solid dependable figure of Les in attendance. Wymondham Town Football club have lost its Life President but Norfolk has lost a giant character whose boots will never be filled.

This Saturday we would like all sports, charity and Wymondham people who knew Les and whose lives he has enriched to come and support Wymondham Town Football Club in their match against Loddon, kick off 2.30pm. This match was meant to a joyous occasion in the fact that it is the first game at home since the club staved off Council eviction from Les King’s beloved Kings Head Meadow.

The match has now taken on a very different meaning and we would sincerely hope that we can get 400-500 Norfolk people to attend this match to show their appreciation of everything Les did for local football, at the club where he was Life President. A special programme will be available and we sincerely hope that as many people will attend as possible to show exactly what this giant of a man meant to Wymondham, it’s Football Club and it’s residents. A minute silence followed by a minutes applause to celebrate the great man’s work, will be held before kick off as a mark of respect.
